07-07-10 Rest Day
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010Volume…you’ve worked hard on your diet, your consistent with your WODs and you’re seeing the results. You’re seeing muscles you may have never seen before, your crushing WODs that use to crush you. What do you do now?
Hey if a little is good, then more must be better right?
WRONG!
Think of your CrossFit training like the addicting drug it is. You wouldn’t unnecessarily and against Doctor’s orders take an extra dose of medication would you? You wouldn’t mix medications would you? Of course not. The movements we do are your prescription for fitness. The WOD is your dose. It has been carefully designed to illicit a certain response. Throw in your own extra workouts on top of the WOD and that is exactly what you have done. You have just overdosed yourself and may have mixed meds, both can have negative side effects.
Dose; response. Just as a Doctor would prescribe the smallest dose of a medication necessary, Our goal should be to do the littlest amount of work possible while still making progress as an athlete. Not to see how much work we can do and still survive. This is smart training and training that leads to fewer injuries, more longevity as an athlete and a longer life.
If after your next WOD you are thinking about throwing in some extra sets of this or that, think about it and ask yourself, “would the energy I have left be best used for recovery or a few sets of wallballs”? If you’ve been paying attention, you’ll grab a foam roller, your post workout meal and some rest.
