In Robert Cialdini’s book; Influence, the science and practice of, he looks into the various ways we are influenced in our daily lives. One of the most powerful is authority. We are all taught from a young age to respect and listen to authority figures. These figures can come in a variety of forms. Some wear clothing that indicates their power of authority such as a Judge or Police Officer. Others carry titles like Doctor or Senator. The point is, there is substance to each of these figures that triggers our compliance.

Our compliance with authorities such as these is should come with virtually no thought at all. However…

There are other “authorities” that trigger our compliance in the absence of the genuine of substance authority. Are you allowing these “authorities” to influence you? What influences the people who influence you?

Are you influence by this?  Let’s hope not, but this is from what millions of American’s would consider an “authority”…our government.

What about this? Does this influence you? Trusted authority?  Not really?

Broaden your view, go outside of the usual circles. Find the authorities that have substance. Ask yourself, “is this authority an expert?” “Does this authority have something to gain by influencing me?”

Here are some influences of mine that I have found to be of great substance and would recommend to anyone. Consider this a short list of recommended reading…
